Highest impact, controlled frequency

Interstitial ads: total attention, zero fatigue.

Interstitials take over the full screen at natural break points β€” between levels, on app open, between articles β€” so the ad is the only thing on screen. The ad gets full attention, but our frequency caps protect UX. Average 2.0–6.5% CTR β€” the highest of any display format.

What it is

Interstitial ads, explained.

Interstitial ads are full-screen advertisements displayed between content transitions β€” typically between two pages of a site, between levels of a game, or after a video completes. The format takes over the entire viewport and demands full user attention until either dismissed or the configured display time elapses. Because they're so high-impact, they're also frequency-capped by default (Mondiad's default is one interstitial per 24 hours per user) to protect the user experience and prevent fatigue.

Of all standardized display formats, interstitial has the highest click-through rate (2.0-6.5% average on the Mondiad network) and the highest brand recall. The tradeoff is impression cost: you pay a premium CPM because the format consumes premium screen real estate and is rate-limited per user. Interstitial works best in apps, gaming sites, content sites with paginated articles, and streaming platforms where natural content-break moments exist. Used carefully β€” and frequency-capped properly β€” interstitial delivers more value per impression than any other display format.

How it works

From bid to conversion in milliseconds.

01

User triggers content break

User finishes an article, completes a video, transitions between pages or app screens.

02

Interstitial loads

Full-screen ad renders during the natural pause. Frequency-capped to once per 24h by default.

03

Ad displays for 5-15s

User can dismiss at any time (close button is mandatory after the first second).

04

Click β†’ conversion

User either dismisses (no charge for non-interaction) or clicks through. Standard S2S tracking.

Use cases

Interstitial ads best use cases.

The verticals and campaign types where this format consistently outperforms alternatives.

Gaming & apps

Natural content breaks between game levels or app sessions. The interstitial-native fit.

Streaming & video

Post-roll interstitials after video content. High attention, controlled context.

Content sites with pagination

Article-to-article transitions on news, recipe, and content sites.

App install campaigns

Mobile app install offers convert exceptionally well via interstitial.

High-ticket conversions

When CPA is high (insurance, finance, B2B), premium CPM is justified by conversion value.

Brand campaigns

Premium screen real estate for premium brand messages β€” luxury, automotive, financial services.

When to pick this format

Interstitial ads vs alternative ad formats.

The honest take on when this format wins β€” and when another format wins.

vs banner

Interstitial has 10-20Γ— the CTR but 4-8Γ— the CPM. Per-conversion economics often favor interstitial for high-CPA verticals.

vs native

Interstitial demands attention; native earns it. Different psychology β€” interstitial works for high-impact moments, native for sustained engagement.

vs popunder

Both are high-attention formats. Interstitial appears in-flow; popunder appears post-flow (behind the browser window).

vs dynamic

Interstitial is full-screen and blocks content; dynamic is anchored and non-blocking. Different use cases.

Case study

"Tested interstitial vs banner on the same mobile-app-install offer in BR. Interstitial CPC was 4Γ— the banner CPC, but install rate was 11Γ— higher. CPI ended up 38% lower on interstitial."
